Through MideTuRiesgo, the Foundation for Press Freedom (FLIP) insists on the importance of self-protection as a tool to practice journalism in violent contexts: identifying vulnerabilities, anticipating possible aggressions and understanding what measures to take to prevent attacks are essential skills for reporting in Colombia. MideTuRiesgo is an application that accompanies and guides journalists in the process of managing their own risk.
Self-protection is also a political challenge in a context where the State is not fully complying with its duty to protect the press. This context makes the knowledge of integral self-protection strategies a necessary skill for the journalistic exercise. At MidetuRiesgo we focus on understanding that there is much that is in our hands to protect our integrity while continuing to do our work.
This application is based on the accumulated experience of FLIP, which has been accompanying journalists at risk for more than 25 years. We also drew from the work of other human rights organizations, journalists and media outlets. This included a review of security protocols and manuals created by civil society organizations such as the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP), the International Federation of Journalists, Tactical Tech, the Association of Journalists of El Salvador, Reporters without Borders, the Ideas for Peace Foundation, Peace Brigades International, Front Line Defenders, the Union of Journalists of Paraguay, among others.
In addition, FLIP conducted interviews with journalists from different media and human rights organizations specialized in digital security and protection in order to learn their perspective on the latest trends regarding press risks. The results of these interviews served as input to complement the recommendations and tools offered by this application.
